The person behind the project
Hi, I’m Simonseng.
I work in tech, and I’m a beginner with plants.
Much of my working life moves quickly: new products, new technology, new messages, and the feeling that everything needs an immediate response. After a while, it becomes easy to expect everything to happen faster.
Plants brought a different pace into my life.
A leaf slowly opens. A new shoot finds its way out of the soil. Neither happens sooner because I’m impatient. I love the quiet sense of certainty in that growth: given the right conditions, light, water, and time gradually leave something I can see.
Of course, plants can struggle, and caring for them doesn’t always go to plan. But watching them grow keeps bringing me back to one thought:
Maybe the world has become so fast that we’ve forgotten the pace of a growing plant is a perfectly normal pace for life.
Where it started
Which plant should I start with?
Once I started falling in love with plants, I found myself with a lot of very ordinary questions.
- What would make a good first houseplant?
- Which plants are easier for a beginner, and what makes each one different?
- What would suit the light and space in my home?
- What would suit me: my personality, my habits, and the time I have to care for it?
I wanted a plant I liked that could also fit my actual life. The answers were scattered across articles, pictures, and care guides, so I kept collecting and comparing what I found.
Then I wondered: could I turn what I was learning into something useful for other beginners, too?
That was the beginning of House Plant Finder.
How I’m building it
Room for curiosity.
Information you can compare.
I began collecting information about individual houseplants and organizing it into a consistent set of details.
- Light
- Watering
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Size
- Care difficulty
- Pet safety
These categories grew out of the questions I had myself. How much light reaches the window? How much room is available? How often will I realistically remember to water? The small details of everyday life matter when choosing a plant.
The pictures and cards are there to make exploring feel easy. You can notice a plant you like, get to know its appearance, and then compare its needs using the same clear information structure. When something catches your attention, you can read further.
Where I hope it leads
Your first step into the world of plants.
I hope House Plant Finder becomes a welcoming first stop for people who are new to plants.
You don’t need to know lots of plant names or have any experience. You can arrive with a small question: what could grow beside my desk? Which plant could I look after? What does the plant I already have actually need?
From choosing your first plant to understanding the one already growing at home, I want this to be a place where you can find clear, useful guidance, and a reason to keep exploring.
Over time, I hope it becomes somewhere worth returning to. Somewhere you can discover more plants, find your own rhythm of care, and gradually feel at home in the world of plants.
This site is a record of my own learning. I hope it can be part of your beginning, too.
