Myth 1: A Bigger Pot Means Faster Growth

This is the most expensive myth in houseplant care. The logic seems sound — give the roots more room and the plant will grow faster. In practice, the opposite usually happens.

When a plant sits in a pot that is too large, the excess soil holds water far longer than the root system can absorb it. The roots stay wet for extended periods, oxygen is displaced by water, and the stage is set for root rot. The plant does not grow faster — it stalls, yellows, and declines.

Choose a pot that is only 1 to 2 inches (2 to 5 cm) wider in diameter than the current root ball. When repotting, go up one size at a time. Myth 2: Put Rocks at the Bottom of the Pot for Drainage

This advice has been passed down for generations, and it is wrong in a way that matters. The idea is that a layer of gravel, broken pottery, or pebbles at the bottom of a pot creates a drainage layer that keeps roots from sitting in water.

What actually happens is the opposite. Water does not move freely from a fine medium (soil) into a coarse medium (gravel) until the soil is completely saturated. Skip the drainage layer entirely. Use a pot with actual drainage holes, and fill it with a well-draining potting mix from bottom to top. Myth 4: "Low Light" Means No Light

"Low light" in the houseplant world means bright indirect light that is filtered or diffused — the kind of light you get near a north-facing window or a few feet from an east or west window. It does not mean a dark corner of a room.
